Joseph Haydn's Op. 76 No. 1 String Quartet has a nickname that originates from Richard Atkinson.
He coined this nickname from the fourth movement's coda, which features a whimsical variation of the main theme in G major, with a surprise forte that sounds like a jack-in-the-box popping out.
This was ultimately my motivation to arrange this work for saxophone quartet. The fun story behind its nickname, combined with the ranges of the fourth movement suiting the saxophone quartet, let to the creating of this arrangement.
The arrangement maintains the original key, and has ossia passages for when the notes are very high.
